Introduction
Welcome to this on-line lesson which will cover the specialized application of human osteology to cases of legal importance, better known as forensic anthropology.
In order to view this module, you must be using a computer with at least Windows 95 and one that has Internet access. Because it is self-instructional, you will be going through the material on your own, without direct instruction from Dr. Albert. The lesson will take approximately 45 minutes to complete.
Before you begin, the prerequisites are:
- Experience using web sites
- Identifying characteristics of dental attrition in skeletal remains
- Identifying weathering patterns of skeletal remains
- Identifying bone pathology in skeletal remains
- Definining terms including forensic anthropology, skeletal biology, osteology, and paleopathology
The goal of this on-line lesson is to help you learn relevant information to compare and contrast osteology in forensic anthropology to osteology in skeletal biology. You will later use this knowledge to recognize and apply these methods in your hands-on lab and perhaps even in your chosen career.
This lesson is designed as a web site, with a graphic link at the bottom of each page which takes you to the next page of the lesson. On the pages providing lesson material, important terms and concepts will be bold, objectives will be at the top of the page in blue and italics, questions will be in red, directions and steps will be highlighted with bullets.
