MIT 510 Artifact

Port City Java: Wired for Performance Improvement was completed as a partial requirement for MIT 510: Design and Development of Instructional Technology, under the guidance of Dr. Mahnaz Moallem in the 2005 spring semester. The client for this project was a large business system with hundreds of national and international franchises and a corporate headquarters and training office located in Wilmington, NC.

This project entailed conducting an extensive front-end analysis (FEA) and developing an implementation plan. The FEA report includes the problem statement describing the identified performance gap in quantifiable terms. The report also provides the results of the operating system analysis, analysis of solutions and recommendations. The implementation plan proposal describes the specific design, development, and implementation components, as well as staffing, resource and budget estimates for the recommended training program. This project was completed within a semester and, unfortunately, it is unknown whether the products were ever utilized by the client.

A team comprised of two fellow graduate students, and myself, collaborated on this project. We worked together as instructional designers and project managers, and additionally I functioned as a Subject Matter Expert, since I was formerly a barista for this company.

The knowledge that I gained from completing this project in terms of team-building and communication skills, as well as macro-level analysis, design and project management experience has better prepared me for a position in the business and industry areas of instructional technology. This was my first time working as a member of a an instructional design team, and I have come to appreciate how valuable it is to be able to work collaboratively with individual personalities that are very different than my own.
