Context & Conditions
The Beginner’s Guide to Tropical Aquariums Website and Multimedia Design for the Individual Learner Paper were completed as partial fulfillment of MIT 511: Multimedia Design and Development, under the guidance of Dr. Arnold Murdock in the fall 2005 semester. The purpose of the website project was to demonstrate technical proficiency using the Macromedia web, video and graphic authoring applications Dreamweaver, Flash and Fireworks. Each program was utilized to create original products. The purpose of the paper was to demonstrate knowledge of theoretical principles related to multimedia design and development.
Scope
At the beginning stages of A Beginner’s Guide to Tropical Aquariums Website project, the site’s content was decided upon and a storyboard was created which demonstrated and incorporated theoretical design and multimedia principles. Once the planning stages were complete, original graphics were developed using Fireworks, as well as a Flash movie. The actual website was constructed using Dreamweaver. The paper was written concurrently with the website development. Both projects were completed within one semester.
Role
The website and its graphical content was designed and developed autonomously. My role changed from Instructional Designer and Subject Matter Expert to Web/Graphic Designer and Developer. For the paper, my role was as researcher and content editor.
Reflection
I found the website project to be extremely fun and rewarding. It gave me a chance to be creative while honing my multimedia design and development skills. This is important to me because I enjoy this type of work and hope to find a position which enables me to further build upon my existing abilities. Writing the paper was also rewarding because I learned theoretical principles, which I can apply when designing multimedia for instructional purposes in the future.
