Tank Size

Before purchasing your fish tank you should decide what size and shape tank you want to buy.

When it comes to tank size you should consider:

  • how big the fish are eventually going to get
    • it is true that the size of a tank will slow the growth of some species, but it doesn't stop it. You are better off buying a tank that is going to be big enough to hold full grown fish.
    • One good rule of thumb is to have 1 gallon of water per 1 inch of fish.
  • how many fish you want to have in the tank
    • it is never a good idea to crowd your tank - it can cause multiple problems including elevated ammonia levels and fish mortality.
  • how much you can afford to spend
    • fish tanks are not cheap when you think about everything else that you need to buy in addition to just the tank - which we will get to in the next section.
