Context and Conditions
How to: Create a GSA ID was completed as partial fulfillment of MIT 513: Computer-Based Instruction. The project was completed during the Spring 2006 semester under the guidance of Dr. Arnold Murdock. This project was designed and developed for IBM Software Executive Briefing Center (SW EBC) personnel who needed instruction on how to create a Global Systems Administration (GSA) ID.
Scope
The How to: Create a GSA ID project entailed designing and developing a computer-based instruction (CBI) course. The product was developed through SumTotalSystem’s Toolbook Instructor application, and the graphics were designed using Macromedia Fireworks. A design document preceded the product. In it was the need/purpose of the CBI, solutions, training goal, learners/context/tools, terminal objective, performance objectives, evaluation, instructional strategy, media requirements, and documentation for how to access the instruction. Additionally, a task analysis was conducted and documented. The CBI project was completed within one semester.
Role
My role on the MIT 513 was the sole designer and developer for the project. I acted as the instructional designer, developer, graphic designer, and project manager. As the instructional designer, I conducted all of the components that went into the design document. As the graphic designer, I put the graphics into appropriate images for the product using Fireworks. As the developer, I designed the CBI within Toolbook and put the content into a usable format. As the project manager, I ensured the project stayed within the time constraints.
Reflection
MIT 513 introduced me to a robust e-learning tool, Toolbook. I was impressed with the various options within Toolbook and the myriad of ways to put it to use. Dr. Murdock illustrated the different uses of Toolbook with real-world projects he had worked on. I would like to have gotten into more scripting and further development with the application, but alas, the time constraint of one semester did not allow for it.
