INTRODUCTION

If you were a car, what type of condition would you be in?  Would you be in tip-top shape?   Would you need an oil change?  Would you be considered junk?

Similar to an automobile's need to have its oil and other liquids changed regularly and kept at the correct level, humans must also properly maintain themselves.  If a car is not properly maintained, and driven too fast or too hard, it could cause serious if not permanent damage to the car and the life of the engine.  The same goes for humans.  If humans do not monitor their lifestyles they could affect their livelihood as well as their lifespan.  One of the main factors of a human that affects their life is their blood pressure.

Studies show that High Blood Pressure affects many Americans but the problem is often not recognized until it is almost too late.  Based on scientific and health findings, it is understood that High Blood Pressure usually develops, and therefore can be prevented, during the early stages of life.  It is important for our youth to develop the healthy habits necessary to prevent High Blood Pressure because many of our lifelong habits develop at an early age.

This WebQuest will allow you to use the web as an additional tool to your textbook to gain a thorough understanding of blood pressure and its affects on your life.  Upon completion of all the lessons in the WebQuest, you will apply what you learn in a means to visually describe how your health would be described by a mechanic if you were an automobile.  To Top of Page

TASK

There are a total of nine assignments involved in this WebQuest that will help you gain a strong understanding of Blood Pressure as well as ways to prevent, monitor, and treat instances of high blood pressure.  You will have the opportunity to use the Internet as a research tool, create group PowerPoint presentations from your research findings, check your own blood pressure, and learn how to interpret your blood pressure measurements.  You will use the resources given to you throughout the WebQuest to gather information to create a table comparing your health attributes to what how they would be described if you were a car (with your blood pressure as the main determinant because it is affected by and affects so many other parts of the body).  You will also have the option of gaining extra credit if you draw a diagram of an automobile that represents your health labeling each part and its function.
