MIT 501:
Motivation in Instructional Design
Context
The research and the subsequent paper were completed as part of the
MIT 501 course entitled Motivation in Instructional Design, taught by Dr.
Edna Mory.
Conditions
At a conference, sponsored by my employer, I had the opportunity to
meet Dr. Falk, a renowned researcher in the area of Museum visitor
research. This meeting moved
me to purchase his book, The
Museum Experience, by Dr. John H. Falk and
Lynn D. Dierking. After
reading his book, I was inspired to choose this
topic for my paper.
Scope
The paper served me well for researching and synthesizing information
to complete the course requirements. Excerpts of the paper also served my
employer, Cape Fear Museum of History and Science in the form of editorial
copy which appeared in several publications.
Role
Many thought-provoking discussions took place within the MIT 501
forums however the course was delivered exclusively online. The research,
synthesis, and writing happened by me alone.
Reflection
At first I was excited about the course.
I thought that learning about the role of motivation in learning
would be lots of fun. Little
did I realize how deeply I would be immersed in the rigors of scholarly
study on the topic. The course
was an intellectual challenge but I learned a great deal, and am primed to
learn more.
