Process

Step I

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) changed the pyramid in spring 2005 because they wanted to do a better job of telling Americans how to be healthy. The agency later released a special version for young people, that includes a way of showing how important it is to exercise and be active every day. In other words, play hard! The steps also are a way of saying that you can make changes little by little to be healthier. One step at a time.

Step V

My Own MyPyramid Guide

  1. Choose pieces of construction paper that coincide with the colors of the Food Pyramid.
  2. On each colored page, write the name of a Food Pyramid section, and the number of servings suggested. Glue the appropriate pictures of food items, cut from magazines, newspapers, or printed from the Internet to the pages of your booklet.
  3. Add a cover sheet then punch 3 holes along the left edge of the construction paper and tie pieces of ribbon through the holes
  4. Decorate the cover of your Food Pyramid booklet!

Step VI

On the Menu

  1. For this project you will be grouped by the teacher into groups of three or four. Each group will plan a three-day menu for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and two snacks that promotes good health and follows the recommended daily servings from the Food Guide Pyramid. Include the nutritional values.
  2. Find a recipe for one of your meals or snack.
  3. Prepare to share your findings, menus, and snack recipe with the class. All members of the group must contribute to the class presentation.
