Instructional Technology Portfolio for Susan Elizabeth Allred

Background

Hello and welcome to my e-portfolio. I am currently teaching high school mathematics and seeking a master’s degree in Instructional Technology. My interests in education and electronics started at an early age. My mother was a mathematics teacher and my father owned a video store/recording studio. My extended family includes a school superintendent, a minister, and several special educators. They taught me the value of education and the importance of technical skills.

I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics education in May of 1996 from UNCW. I began teaching and befriended the computer resource teacher. We worked together to incorporate technology lessons into my courses. This was the perfect marriage of my educational and technological skills.

I earned my national board teacher certification in November of 2001 in mathematics, and then began seeking a field for a master’s degree. I wanted to pursue technology in education. I enrolled in the Instructional Technology program in the Spring of 2002. This program has expanded my knowledge and interest of technology and education. I now look forward to taking that knowledge back into the educational system.

Philosophy

I believe that teaching should be about preparing students for their adult life. In order to be prepared for a work environment, students must learn skills that involve working together to achieve a common goal, problem solving, time management, and technology. These skills require more than any one content area. Therefore, it is important for teachers to incorporate more than content into their instruction. Teachers should also incorporate different types of teaching styles to suit diverse learners. The use of technology and constructivist teaching practices such as problem based learning are perfect vehicles to do that. These practices allow students to discover more than content alone. The students acquire additional social and technological skills they will need in the future.

Future Plans and Goals

My goal is to use my teaching experience and technology skills to design and develop resources for teachers to use in classrooms.
