MIT 520-Managing Instructional Development
Context and Conditions: The project management plan, Training in Spanish Language and Culture was an individual project designed and developed to meet the course requirement of MIT 520, Managing Instructional Development. The project was completed under the guidance of Dr. Arnold Murdock in the fall of 2006. The goal of the Training in Spanish Language and Culture project was to design training in Spanish language and culture for the staff of New Hanover High School. The cost to implement the training was $1500.00, provided by New Hanover County Schools. The training was delivered in June of 2007. The project was completed within one semester. The program is no longer in use.
Scope: The project for MIT 520 demonstrated my ability to plan, schedule, allocate resources, create a budget, prepare a proposal, control cost, and manage personnel. I demonstrated my project management skills by designing the project plan and its implementation. Within the project management plan the following were defined: the project scope, the proposal, the contract, the communications plan, constraints, resources, the client sign-off, the risk analysis, and project control mechanisms such as the work break down structure, schedule, and allocations.
Role: As the project manager, instructional designer and instructional developer, I performed all the information gathering tasks, conducted the analyses, and managed the project’s resources and timeline. I began by designing a needs assessment plan to determine the need of the organization (New Hanover High School). I also developed a Gantt chart to describe each implementation step, the timeline, and resources needed.
Reflection: MIT 520 provided me with the opportunity to broaden my knowledge about the managerial aspect of an Instructional System. I have learned to plan and schedule more effectively and efficiently to meet the constantly changing demands that exist within the real world. MIT 520 also provided me the opportunity to learn and use Microsoft Project which has proven to be very helpful within my other classes.
