Learning Microsoft MailMerge

Context & Conditions

The Learning about Honduras Web Site and Learning Microsoft MailMerge web sites were designed and developed as a partial requirement for MIT 511 Multimedia Design and Development under the guidance of Dr. Arnold Murdock, during the fall semester of 2006. The course was an independent study of multimedia applications. The learning module was developed to understand and implement software functions of MX Dreamweaver, Fireworks and Flash 2004.

Scope

The MIT 511 project aimed to demonstrate communication, aesthetics and learning theories applicable to designing instructional products using multimedia and instructional communication. The purpose of the project was to design a self-instructional module using each of the software applications. The products were designed, developed and completed within one semester. The MIT 511 products show applications of contemporary theories of multimedia development from: Richard E. Mayer Multimedia Learning (2001),and Linda Lohr’s Creating Graphics for Learning and Performance (2003). Each classmate chose one other classmate to review and critique their finished module.

Role

§         Instructional Designer

§         Instructional Developer

As an instructional designer / developer I tired to keep the subject matter foremost in the project. I designed the self-instructional module for ease of moving from one screen to another capturing the principles of Mayer and Lohr. I applied the multi-media strategies to provide instructional communication for the learner. I critiqued another classmate’s web site and formally submitted the review as a learning tool.

Reflection

The MIT 511 project introduced multimedia in the form of three software packages unfamiliar to me. I found initial decisions as to which design I wanted to use confused the purpose of the project multimedia development. I spent too much time discovering the exciting capabilities of each link within the software, and should have focused more on the overall project content.

In reflection, I would: first develop as detailed as possible an instructional storyboard web site before implementing any communication strategies; second I would rehearse specific instructions for navigation and storage from remote sites; third I would incorporate more videos and pictures for learner validity. I especially valued the critique between classmates of the modules. Determining output from another’s perspective detailed my shortcomings of multimedia development as well as my strengths.

Artifact Rationale

Select appropriate applied information technologies to achieve instructional objectives.

Learning about Honduras Web Site

The MIT 511 projects involved designing and developing a visual message. The proper media for the delivery of the message was determined and used to deliver the message.

Artifact Rationale

Develop projected and non-projected graphic instructional materials.

Learning about Honduras Web Site

MIT 511 included demographic information where multimedia content was designed to enhance the final product.

Demonstrate knowledge of computer utilization practices and the ability to apply them in instructional settings including: computer literacy, software selection and evaluation, instructional management, hypermedia development.

Learning about Honduras Web Site

The MIT 511 projects demonstrate multimedia development and utilization of three software products (Dreamweaver, Fireworks and Flash) for the purpose of instruction.

Design and produce computer based instruction, including drill-and-practice and tutorial programs.

Learning Microsoft MailMerge Web Site

The Multimedia projects demonstrated hypermedia products to produce computer based instruction for learning.

Design and produce interactive multimedia systems.

Learning about Honduras Web Site

MIT 511 demonstrated the merging of two interactive systems to create a multimedia instructional product for learning.
