MIT 542– Internship: Lightspan Tutorial for New Hanover County Schools

Context and Conditions

Working under the direction of Karen Greene, New Hanover Counties Math and Science Coordinator,
I designed and developed an web based tutorial for Lightspan. Lightspan is a comprehensive online assessment solution that quickly identifies strengths and needs for students, classrooms, schools, or the entire district. It guides instructional decisions to improve student achievement over time. Teachers use Strengths & Needs reports to understand exactly how individual students and the class as a whole performed against each state standard. This allows teachers to customize individual and/or group learning by targeting instruction where it is needed most.

Scope

Lightspan is a software program that is used by middle school teachers to help with benchmark testing to help plan their math curriculum. The tutorial was designed to help teachers understand how to create tests and interpret data from the tests.

Role

I was a designer and developer of this web-based tutorial.

Reflection

The major accomplishements that I made during my intership are: creating the overall design nd development for a self-instructional module, lerning how to use new functions in Frontpage and learning how to use Photoshop by manipulating screen shots to use in web-design. I would like to continue to develop my technical skills as I design other web-based tutorials in the future.
