MIT 514 – Distance Learning

Context and Condition

Working under the supervision of Dr. Summerville, I designed, developed and presented a lesson for distance education learners along with Patsy McQuisten another MIT student. The lesson introduced and encouraged 9th grade World History students to discuss cultural issues and the conditions that Afghan women endured while under the control of the Taliban. The students will read an excerpt from The Breadwinner review a perspective of what women endured. They will discuss organizations such as women for afghanistan and other organizations that work toward the women’s movement in Afghanistan. A videoconference with International Relief Development (IRD) Security Advisor in Kabul was pre-recorded to discuss conditions in class.

To gain attention for the lesson, a famous photo of Afghan woman’s face was displayed on one of the screens in the distance education classroom. Afghan music was played to set the tone for the lesson along with a guiding question for the learners to think about, “What does this picture mean to you?” Students at the host and remote sites were equally included in the lesson through brainstorming, sharing of prior knowledge and through participation in reading a segment of the book The Breadwinner. A PowerPoint was used to guide the lesson. A pre-recorded video was used as the focal point of the lesson.

Scope

The 9th grade World History High School class is comprised of 15 students. Enrolled in the class are 6 male students and 9 female students. Seven of the students are African American while 8 are white. The teaching strategy we used was to use real life examples to engage students and help them to build on their intellectual skills and moral conscience attitudes. We reviewed the location of Afghanistan and the Taliban's influence the country. Next, we introduced the objectives for the lesson.

Role

As an Instructional Designer I designed, developed and implemented a lesson for a distance education
class. I analyzed the learners and context, defined the objectives, developed the instructional stategies, and selected the delivery system. I also took on the role of the instructor dduring the implementation of the lesson. As the instructor I used Gagne's Conditions for Learning in the development of the lesson.

Reflection

The experience of designing, developing and presenting a lesson using the distance education lab was a wonderful experience. I was exposed to the various resources available in the distance education lab: video conferencing camera, multiple screens to show media and to view the remote site, microphones, document camera as well as work closely with a technician during the planning stages and implementation of the lesson. Patsy and I practiced using all the equipment before the actual lesson. Everything worked fine. However, during the lesson the pre-recorded video did not transmit.
